Welcome to San Juan Island Library’s Summer Reading Program!

We have fun planned for families, children, tweens, teens and adults. Stop by the San Juan Island Library to pick up a Summer Reading Program Starter Kit or participate online with the Beanstack app.

Also happening this summer are special events for a variety of ages and our popular Wednesday Afternoon Performance series featuring professional family-fun entertainment. See our calendar for a complete list of Summer Reading events

Kid’s Summer Reading

Kid slumber partyWin prizes, books, and entries into our Grand Prize Raffle Drawing! There are multiple ways to participate. Try all of them or select the option that suits you and/or your child best!

  • Use the Reading Challenge to track your reading and/or listening time.
  • Use the Activity Challenge to complete a series of activities.
  • Participate in our special Outdoor Adventure Challenge to enjoy family time while discovering spaces and preserves and the stories they hold. Co-sponsored by the Land Bank.
  • Use our FREE online program called Beanstack using the link above. Digital badges are generated to help you track your progress and meet your goals! You do not have to register again if you registered as a San Juan Island Library user last year. Look for the 2024 Summer Reading Program Challenge based on your age/grade level!

Prizes can be claimed in person at the San Juan Island Library during open hours, during our Wednesday Afternoon Performances at Friday Harbor Elementary School, at our Friday morning Preschool Story Play sessions at the Fairgrounds, and at other special events for youth happening this summer. The Grand Prize Raffle Drawing winners will be announced at the end of August. You may claim your other prizes until Labor Day.

Teen Summer ReadingBook jump

Teen Summer Reading Program is open to youth entering 6th-12th grade in the 2024-2025 school year. Track your progress online using the Beanstack link above, or print out this reading log to get started. Copies are also available for pick up at the library.

Track the days you read from June 13 – August 3 and win prizes!

The basic path for Teen Summer Reading:

  1.  Make a daily reading goal for yourself. Example: 45 minutes

  2. Mark off a megaphone for every day you read, or use Beanstack to track your reading, between June 13 and August 3.

  3.  For every 7 days that you read, you earn a prize!
  4. 7 days: Free book and digital ticket for Grand Prize Drawing
  5. 14 & 21 days: Your choice of prize and digital ticket for Grand Prize Drawing
  6.  28, 35, 42, & 49 days: Digital ticket for Grand Prize Drawing
  7. Other Information: Digital tickets for the Grand Prize Drawing are awarded with each prize. Decide which of the three drawings you want your tickets to be entered into.
  8. Physical prizes can be picked up at the library through the end of August.
  9.  All reading must be entered into the Beanstack app or brought to the library before August 9 for digital tickets to be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing.

Adult Summer Reading

Adult Reading Program

Adult Summer Reading is open to everyone aged 18+.  Starting June 13th and lasting through Labor Day, track your reading to enter into a raffle to win prizes like a Kayaking/Whale Watching trip for two, a 60-minute massage, gift cards for groceries and gas, and a Reader’s Paradise gift bundle.

How to participate:

1. Digitally: Download the Beanstack app on your phone or visit Beanstack using the link above. Log the days that you read (any amount of time and any book counts as reading!), and you’ll get badges that will earn you entries into the raffle.

OR

2. With a hard copy: Come in to the library to pick up a reading tracker sheet, log your days spent reading, and bring it in to the library before Labor Day to claim and enter your raffle tickets.

All Ages Outdoor Adventure Challenge

In partnership with the Land Bank, we’re excited to present the Outdoor Adventure Challenge! Print out a packet or pick one up at the library, grab a water bottle and a good sun hat, and get ready to explore San Juan Island!
