Know Your Islanders: Dr. Jason Hodin and the UW Labs Baby Seastar Program

About eight years ago starfish from Mexico to Alaska succumbed to a still-mysterious and deadly syndrome known as “seastar wasting.” The worst hit was our iconic sunflower star, and it is now listed as critically endangered. Over the past 30 months, with the support and partnership of the Nature Conservancy, Dr. Jason Hodin and his team at the UW’s Friday Harbor Labs have established the world’s only captive rearing program for this important predatory species, one whose recent absence from California may have contributed to massive disruptions in the kelp forest ecosystem. Dr. Hodin will talk about sunflower stars, urchins and kelp, his challenges and successes in raising the stars, and prospects for the future.
