Library Programs:
After School Arts:
Children grades K-4th explore their creativity to make art projects and help the Library with its collaborative seasonal displays. Held during the school year.
After School Read Aloud:
Children grades K-4th listen to classic stories read aloud for their enjoyment and curiosity. Hosted by Kathy Babbitt. Supplemental activities and light snack provided.
Bilingual Spanish Storytime:
This storytime is presented in Spanish and English, with a fun half-hour of stories read by Friday Harbor community members. Held select Tuesday evenings at the Library.
Book Club for 5th and 6th Graders:
Held during the school year, participants receive a free paperback book to read, then meet on a Saturday evening to discuss and watch the film adaptation of the story. Pizza and drinks provided courtesy of the Friends of the San Juan Island Library.
Family Film Nights:
Movie showings at the Library are held select times during the year. Popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Library.
Island Tail Tutors:
Elementary school-aged students practice reading aloud to assistant dogs. Registration for 15 minute sessions are done on a first come, first serve basis. Held select times throughout the year in partnership with local community members.
Lapsit & Linger:
This storytime is offered through a partnership of the Library and the San Juan Island Family Resource center. Caregivers are invited to join their babies and toddlers for songs, stories, and movement activities. Socializing and playtime follow. Held weekly, no registration required.
Preschool Storytime:
Preschool-aged children listen to stories, songs, and learn fingerplays. No registration required. Crafts and special holiday programs featured seasonally.
Special Events:
The Library offers special programming throughout the year, including book release parties, game days, yoga, and more. The Library also partners regularly with the San Juan Early Learning Consortium to host special storytimes such as Pajama Storytime and the Dr. Seuss Birthday Party in honor of Read Across America.
Summer Reading Program:
Held annually, this literacy incentive program is designed for children of all ages and levels. Participants receive a program kit with activities to earn prizes and new books. Special guests performances are held Wednesdays at 1:30 PM on the grounds of Friday Harbor Elementary School. The entire program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the San Juan Island Library.
