Friends of the Library Board Members

Stan Mayhew
Karen and I moved to San Juan Island full time in 2012 following my retirement as a County and Municipal Judge and as a practicing attorney in Fairplay, Colorado. We keep busy around our property on the island. In addition to my volunteer work with the Friends of the Library, I also enjoy volunteering at the library checking and shelving books and doing book mending. I also volunteer at the San Juan Island Food Co-op. For fun, I sing with the San Juan Singers and the Island Chordsmen Plus.
Donald Hendrix
Vice President
Donald Hendrix is a retired research scientist who has had a life-long interest in books, partly due to the fact that his parents were both educators and his mother and brother were librarians. He and wife Susie have lived on San Juan Island since 2002. He enjoys wood working, genealogical research and singing with the San Juan Singers.
Nancy Sheplor
Nancy Sheplor has been enthusiastic about libraries since junior high school in Texas. This is when she became a library aide, shelving books, helping class mates find titles and assisting the librarian. Her first 'adult' book was "Robinson Crusoe." An avid reader and library enthusiast all her life, Nancy received her school library endorsement and lived happily ever after in libraries. She worked in Texas, Alaska and here in Friday Harbor. You can find her processing new materials, shelving and straightening and occasionally assisting patrons, even now. Giving a helping hand with Friends of the Library is yet another way to support our library.
Judy Bentzen
A salty accountant with a love for books and libraries sums up Judy's life pretty well. Served as a “Tugboat Annie” aboard a salvage tug; actively worked several boatbuilding/marina operations; raced competitively with husband Arne aboard several class sailboats; employed as an accountant throughout her life.
Diana Pieples
Louise Lelevich
Louise is a retired pediatric nurse from northern California residing on San Juan Island since 2004. A member of the board of the Friends of the San Juan Island Library since 2015, she has always loved reading and sharing books. Her interests include gardening, her up-cycle apron business, chasing her four rescue greyhounds, and roller skating.
Margaret Barker
Jamie Rice
Jamie is a kindergarten teacher at The Elementary School and works during the summer for The Family Resource Center as the Kindergarten Transition Program Coordinator. She spent five years working with the ELL Children’s Enrichment Program at the Library, but now if focusing on finishing her Masters in Teaching. Yet, she still makes time to volunteer for The Friends of the Library and loves supporting the youth programs. During her free time, she enjoys yoga, reading, and being outside.
