Art History with Tory Raggett |
Tuesdays, June 11, 18 & 25 Art History Series with Tory Raggett
1:30pm to 3:00pm - Library Meeting Room Space is limited so please register by calling or dropping by the front desk.
This series of three, 1 1/2 hour classes, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will combine slides, art history and discussion to stimulate your understanding, knowledge and enjoyment of paintings.
The first, Canada’s Group of Seven: Painting in the Raw, describes the way in which a group of painters based in Toronto, developed an interest in creating a new, dynamic approach to painting Canada’s vast and dramatic wilderness. The early part of the 20th century was an exciting time to be an artist anywhere, and that was definitely true in Canada.
The second, US Painters: Exploring Reality, looks at several major American artists who have explored what it means to be a realistic painter. Starting at the end of the 19th century and continuing to the present, we’ll look at what motivated each of these artists to embrace realism, even as they gave it a very personal twist.
The third, Eye Candy #2, is an exercise devoted to seeing and interpreting paintings solely from a visual perspective, without identifying them in an art historical context. With new images this summer, learn what you’re attracted to, and encourage yourself to push beyond that visual comfort zone. Figuring out what you see in a painting—and hearing the way other viewers experience the same piece—will give you fresh insights into visual awareness.
