An Appreciation of Ornamental Grasses
with Jeff Bossler
Friday, July 24th at 7:00pm

Orcas Islander and Local Author Jeff Bossler will give a presentation on July 24th at the San Juan Island Library on Ornamental Grasses. Jeff will begin with an introduction explaining how and why grasses are
important to civilization as we know it. Jeff will also discuss the basics of proper maintenance and expectations through animated illustrations.

San Juan Island National Park Historian and Author Mike Vouri will present another view of the Pig War crisis of 1859, and shed new light on this historical moment on San Juan.

"Exploring the Life of Artist, Architect and Visionary James Hubbell through Film" with Host Andrea Simmons.

On August 23rd, at 6:00pm the Library and Andrea Simmons will host the screening of two documentaries, The Making of the Pacific Rim Parks and The Art and Vision of James Hubbell. James Hubbell will be visiting San Juan Island in September, and this program is sponsored by The San Juan Island Museum of Art and Sculpture Park.

Workshop with Paul Nelson
Saturday, April 4th at
2:00- 5:00pm in the Meeting Room

Join Paul Nelson, founder of the non-profit Global Voices Radio and co-founder of the Northwest Spoken Word Lab (SPLAB!), for this free poetry workshop, sponsored by the Friends of the Library. In Paul’s workshop, “Organic Poetry”, participants will have the opportunity to listen to interviews Paul has done over the years with poets, discuss the writing process, and participate in writing exercises.

Hear local poets & Paul Nelson read their
poetry aloud by the fireplace.


At 5:30pm, on April 4th, participants of the workshop will read their own work, and be able to hear Paul read some of his poetry aloud. Whether your interested in writing, or just listening, please join us for this exciting two part event!



Garth Stein, Author of
The Art of Racing in the Rain, visits the
Library on April 5th at 6:00pm

Please join us at the Library on Sunday, April 5th at 6:00pm to hear best selling author Garth Stein read from his book The Art of Racing in the Rain. The story is told through the eyes of Enzo, a dog who has learned all he needs to know about life through his master, Denny, and by watching television. Enzo believes he has what it takes to be a compassionate and successful human being in his next life.

Garth has written two other novels, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets (Soho Press, 2005) and
Raven Stole the Moon (Pocket, 1998). He is also the author of the full-length play Brothers Jones. Garth currently resides in Seattle, with his wife and sons, and their dog, Comet.

African Cooking Class with Grace Kuto

Meet the Author of Harambee! Stories and Recipes from the African Family Circle, Grace Kuto, at the Library on April 17th. Grace will host a free African Cooking Class at 5:00pm in the Meeting Room. Those interested in the cooking class should register by calling 378-2798. Grace will also talk about her book in the main Library at 6:30pm.
 

Jungle Books at the Library!
Thursday, April 23rd at 3:45pm


Seattle based Book-It Repertory Theater will be at the San Juan Island Library, on Thursday April 23rd at 3:45 to perform “Jungle Books”, an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale. See the beloved characters Baloo, Bagheera & Shere brought to life through the original words of the author. This program is ideal for children of all ages & their families. A storytelling workshop will be hosted by Book-It at 4:45pm in the Meeting Room. The storytelling workshop is free, but registration is required.

From the Absurd to the Surreal
Featuring the works of Samuel Beckett and Sarah Ruhl
Monday, July 20th at 6:15 pm

A free rountable discussion for dramatists, writers, and the public led by J. Chris Westgate.

Come to learn, share, and get inspired through an exploration of the dramatic works of Beckett and Ruhl.

We will see short videos from Beckett plays, a short slide presentation from a Sarah Ruhl play production, stir in some juicy information from Chris Westgate, shake it up with lively roundtable discussion from anyone attending (including the personal lives of Beckett or Ruhl), add beverage and snacks, and it is a recipe for an interesting evening.

Samuel Beckett was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature and Sarah Ruhl was a 2005 Pulitzer Prize finalist.

J. Chris Westgate, UC Fullerton Professor of English, comparative literature and linguistics ( with numerous publications on drama and theater ) will be leading the roundtable discussion.
