Ariel Gore Visits San Juan Island Library
Saturday, May 12th at 6:00pm!

Live and Learn @ your library is pleased to announce the special appearance of Activist, Author, and Traveler, Ariel Gore. Ms. Gore has been called “the Generation X Dr. Spock” and “The reigning Mother Superior” by Time Magazine.

Parents, writers, and inquiring minds will enjoy hearing Ms. Gore discuss how her travels and life experiences have made her the person she is today.

Ariel Gore is the founder and editor-in-chief of the award winning parenting zine Hip Mama, and author of Atlas of the Human Heart, The Death and Resurrection Show; The Hip Mama Survival Guide and The Mother Trip. Ms. Gore teaches writing workshops at the Attic in Portland, Oregon where she currently resides with her family.

Arctic Raven Gallery, San Juan Library and Skagit Valley College, are co-sponsoring a lecture by Greg Colfax, Native American Artist/Philosopher and former visiting faculty at Evergreen College Native American Studies. His topic will be "Origins and Fears of North West Coast Native Art".

Whale Museum Lecture
June 8th at 6:30

Join us at the Library for a lecture on the natural history of Cetacean species native to the Salish Sea (either all or part of the year).

Species include Humpback, Gray, and Minke Whales, Orcas, Dall's Porpoise, and Harbor Porpoise.Attendees will learn about whale adaptations to a fully aquatic lifestyle; the differences between Baleen and Toothed Whales; Orca life history; and how to tell the difference between a Dolphin and a Porpoise.This presentation will also include information on threats and conservation efforts related to these animals locally.


Hiking the Camino in Spain with Robbie Lawson
June 9th 7:30pm

On Saturday June 9th at 7:30pm, the San Juan Island Trails Committee, will host a Live & Learn presentation on "Hiking the Camino in Spain" by islander, Robbie Lawson. Robbie spent three summers from 2001-2003 joining hundreds of modern-day pilgrims from around the world hiking this centuries-old route across northern Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela. Robbie will give a slide show of her walk and talk about the history, the countryside, the people, challenges, and logistics of this fascinating adventure.

On a much more local level, members of the Trails Committee will share information about the work they are engaged in here on San Juan Island. Hiking and walking enthusiasts of all kinds, from armchair to extreme, are welcome. This event is free and open to the public.

Make Your Own Travel Journal Workshop

On June 18th at 6:00pm Laura Tretter will host a “Make Your Own Travel Journal” Workshop. Journal making supplies will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the Library! Registration is required for this event. Call 378-2798.

Slideshow of China's Borderlands & the People

Learn about minority tribes in the furthest reaches of China in a presentation by Jacob Rawson, a University of Washington Graduate Student. Mr. Rawson & his colleague have just returned from their trip overseas where they learned about how these tribes live and the problems they face.
