Hawaiian hula is a prayer for Mother Earth, her inhabitants and the interdependence of all living beings. This beginner's class at the library will be a hands-on introduction of the hula, including a simple Hawaiian chant, basic steps and their meanings, practicing the pa'i (step rhythms) with the ipu gourd, and learning a modern (auana) hula to a mele (melody). Alice has
studied on Moloka'i, Hawai'i and Kaua'i with well-known Kumu Hula (master hula composer) Frank Hewett Kawaikapuokalani and his haumana (student) Kumu Hula Keala Ching. As young teen, she practiced hula for four years, developing a foundation that is now is a life-long passion. As a haumana herself, she humbly passes on the hula to share the Aloha Spirit with others.
This workshop is designed for students in Grade 6 through adults. Please call 378-2798 to register, or email abourne@sjlib.org
Alice teaches hula classes here on San Juan for girls and women on
Wednesdays. Girls' classes provide an introduction to Hawaiian culture and dance through traditional legends, chant practice, hula movements and storytelling, the use of hula implements, the study of hula dances, as well as body awareness through yoga and hula hooping. Women's' classes focus on the study of Hawaiian chants, ancient (kahiko) and modern hula dances.
