Tax Filing Preparation Help Available at Library
Volunteers will be at the San
Juan Island Library two Saturdays in February to help low and
moderate income people and senior file their federal income tax
returns. The volunteers have been trained in the AARP tax-aide
program, and can help file tax returns at no cost to the public.
Appointments for tax help may be made in person or by telephone
at the reference desk of the San Juan Island Library, and
volunteers will meet with individuals to prepare tax returns in
the library.
Volunteers from the AARP tax-aide service have been offering
free tax preparation help at the Mullis Community Senior Center
on Wednesdays, and this year they are expanding their service to
the library on Saturday February 4 and Saturday February 18 from
10 AM to 4 PM. To use the service, it is necessary to make a
one-hour appointment and to bring all W-2 forms and other income
statements to the appointment. The volunteers have some
experience with helping low and moderate income working people
obtain the Earned Income Tax Credit as well. The purpose of the
program is to help individuals, so returns for small businesses
will not be eligible for the free service.
In addition to its collections of books, audio books and videos
to loan, the library also provides computers for the public to
use for email, Internet searching, and working in word
processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Library computers
offer software to help new computer users learn to type and use
a keyboard, and guides, called tutorials, for learning to use
the computer's mouse. A computer is available for those with
special needs, featuring a magnifier and foreign languages.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6
PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM
to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to
island residents with proof of residency.
