Discussion about Democracy and
Citizenship and
the Patriot Act to be at the Library
September Project Commemorates
9/11
Internationally with Public Forums
A panel discussion and public forum about democracy, citizenship
and patriotism will take place at the public library on Thursday
September 8 to remember 9/11. A brief panel discussion of
community leaders will be followed by the a moderated open
microphone. Thousands of people around the world will join in
September Project forums and events, delving into a deeper
understanding of what the buzz words "Democracy, Citizenship and
Patriotism" really mean.
The program begins at 7 PM at the San Juan Island Library, and
may challenge unquestioned beliefs, promote critical thinking,
and provide a forum for islanders to communicate their ideas to
one another--whether participants celebrate American freedoms or
criticize current policies. The San Juan Island event arose out
of a call for libraries across the world to recognize 9/11 and
its relevance to issues of democracy called the September
Project (www.theseptemberproject.org). Thousands of libraries
will host displays, show films, lead discussions, and engage
library visitors in remembering 9/11 and thinking about
democracy, citizenship and patriotism.
"Public libraries are a cornerstone of democracy in America,
because they provide information, and the free access to
information, that people need if they are to make informed
decisions about self-governance. One upshot of 9/11, the USA
PATRIOT Act, could have a chilling effect on free access to
information. The library community sees that as a challenge to
fundamental democratic values." said Lauren Stara, Library
Director. "We are excited to host this kind of discussion here,
and hope you will come and voice your thoughts" she continued.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6
PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM
to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to
island residents with proof of residency.
