Youth Services Librarian Joins
Library Staff
Shannan Sword joins the San Juan
Island Library staff as the Youth Services Librarian and
assistant director. Sword previously worked at Lane Public
Library in Fairfield, Ohio on teen collections and
programming. She also worked in children's programming in
Stratford, Ontario. Her Masters in Library Science degree is
from University of Western Ontario, while her undergraduate
degree, in forensic anthropology, is from the University of
Toronto.
"We are so pleased Shannan is here
to help with our children's programs," said librarian Lauren
Stara. Sword has already been deeply immersed in the
library's summer reading program, encouraging school-aged
children to maintain their reading during the summer months.
Community members will have an opportunity to meet Ms. Sword
Tuesdays through Saturdays or at the Harry Potter Party on
Saturday July 16 at 2:00 PM. The party will be a fun event to
celebrate the release of the sixth book, Harry Potter and the
Half-Blood Prince in J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series.
"I am very excited to keep up the
great programs the previous children's librarian had going,
and I am looking forward bringing some of my favorite teen
programs here. Kids in Ohio really liked the teen anime club
we started. I also want to continue to work closely with the
public and private schools."
The Library's collection includes
both fiction and non-fiction books for very young children,
for grade-school aged children and for adults. In addition to
its collections of books, audio books, DVDs, videos and
magazines to loan, the library also provides computers for
public use.
Library hours are Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday
from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday
from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to island residents
with proof of residency.
