Coordinator Fills Shifts
The San Juan Island Library is
singing kudos to Kathy Babbitt, the volunteer coordinator, for
an outstanding performance. For the first time in more than
three years, all shifts in the library's schedule for volunteers
will be anchored by at least one regular volunteer next week.
Volunteers who work on an on-call basis were recruited to cover
those shifts without an assigned volunteer.
In spite of the significance of this
feat, the library still has a need for additional volunteers. A
pool of floating volunteers is always needed to cover vacations
and emergencies. And since two volunteers staff each shift, some
regular shifts are still available. Volunteer duties include
using the computer scanner to check books out to patrons, using
the computer to check books in, and returning used books to the
shelves.
"Kathy does an outstanding job of
recruiting and training volunteers. Her ability to track,
schedule and manage between 70 and 80 volunteers is truly rare,
and I am very proud of her accomplishment," said library
director Lauren Stara.
The Library's collection includes
both fiction and non-fiction books for very young children, for
grade-school aged children and for adults. In addition to its
collections of books, audio books, DVDs, videos and magazines to
loan, the library also provides computers for public use.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM
to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday from 1 PM to 5
PM. Library cards are free to island residents with proof of
residency.
