San Juan
Island Library and School District
Earn a Library Technology Grant
The
San Juan Island Library and the San Juan Island School District
today officially announced the joint acceptance of a $20,000
Washington State Library Technology Enhancement Funding grant
for the delivery of San Juan Island Public Library resources to
the libraries of San Juan Island School District and also to the
Senior Services Center. Technology Enhancement Funding is a
program of the federally funded Library Services and Technology
Act (LSTA) Connectivity Project and the Institute of Museum and
Library Services. This program provides an opportunity for
libraries to receive funding assistance for projects that
develop or enhance the information technology infrastructure of
a library.
This year's grant
cycle was highly competitive, with 65 Washington state libraries
submitting grant applications representing a total of $2.7
million in requests. Out of these applicants, 16 libraries were
awarded a total of $678,000 in grants.
The grant money
will be used to purchase 7 workstations to be installed in the
school libraries and the Senior Services Center for connection
to San Juan Island Library resources, to provide a high-speed
connection between the Library and the School District, and to
provide training on Library resources to users of the new
systems.(See photo of workstation and networking
hardware purchase above.) Services to be delivered to
the school libraries and Senior Services Center through this
project include remote catalog access, on-line database
searching, and InterLibrary Loan resources. The project is
currently underway and will be completed over the coming summer.
