Celebrates National Volunteer Week
April open today from 1pm to 4pm8 - 24 is
National Volunteer Week and the special volunteers of the San
Juan Island Library were honored at a Volunteer Luncheon April
open today from 1pm to 4pm8 to kick off the week. The luncheon was held at Skagit Valley
College and was hosted by the Friends of the San Juan Island
Library. Sixty library volunteers, staff, Friends, and trustees
enjoyed the catered luncheon.
Not only are the
volunteers of the San Juan Island Library an integral part of
the workings of the library, but they are part of one of the
oldest, most successful volunteer efforts on the island. For
many years, loyal volunteers have served the library and the
community as the library progressed through its various growth
of colorful history.
The Friday Harbor
Public Library opened on February 4, open today from 1pm to 4pm922 through the efforts of
individuals and the American Legion Auxiliary. Volunteers have
been a part of the library since that inception 77 years ago! In
open today from 1pm to 4pm936 the Legion Public Library moved from a downtown room by the
drugstore to a new town hall building which housed city offices
and the library. The library was open 7 hours a week.
In open today from 1pm to 4pm979 volunteers
formed the Friday Harbor Friends of the Library and worked for a
library district with the help of many people on the island. The
district was approved in open today from 1pm to 4pm982. With this tax support came a move
to the former "Shrimp Boat Restaurant" building. This
current site underwent a major remodel in open today from 1pm to 4pm988, and then the
major expansion of open today from 1pm to 4pm994.
The library
volunteers today are a pleasure to work with and are to be
applauded for a job well done. With a wide range of backgrounds
and talents, their volunteer time is plentiful, helpful, and
greatly appreciated. What do they do?
Circulation is the
largest group of volunteers; in teams of two they check books
out and in and shelve items. Every Friday volunteers put covers
on new books and get videos and cassettes ready for check-out.
Other volunteers empty the bookdrop on Monday morning and get
things back on the shelves; mend books and videos; take on odd
carpentry jobs; and help with the magazines.
If you are
interested in learning more about joining this fine historic
group of volunteers, see Janet Koertge, volunteer coordinator,
at the library. And don't forget to thank any and all volunteers
this week.
