Public Access Computers  

The Library offers 11 multi-purpose computers with the following capabilities:

  • High-speed Internet access for web browsing and web email
  • MS Office- word processing, spreadsheet, publication, and presentation applications.
  • Online databases
  • Catalog & Interlibrary Loan searching
  • High quality laser printing at $.10 / page

These computers are divided into three basic categories:

  • 4 Workstations tower style computers available for 30 minute sessions. Sign up at the Reference Desk.
  • 2 Student Priority desktop computers available for 30 minute sessions with special priority access given to students in the hours immediately following school. Sign up at the Reference Desk.
  • 5 Laptops computers available for 1 hour sessions for use within the Library only. All patrons must fill out an Acceptance of Responsibility sheet to check out a laptop. In addition, Patrons 16 years old and younger must have a guardian's Acceptance of Responsibility on file at the Reference Desk to use these computers.

General Public Computer Rules:

  • Each person may sign up for one computer usage per day, laptops included.
  • Users may sign up 2 days in advance for a 30 minute computer. Laptops cannot be reserved unless by prior agreement with library staff.
  • Users have a 10 minute grace period to begin their session before their slot is forfeited. The session length will not be extended due to late arrival.
  • Sign ups must be done in person at the Reference Desk. No phone, web, or email sign ups are allowed.

Children's Computing
The Library offers one filtered Internet computer specifically designated for children's Internet access. Located in the Children's area, this station uses Net Nanny software to provide a safe Internet experience. The other children's designated computer, also in the Children's area, has a large number of learning CD-ROMs preloaded and presented for easy access by our youngest patrons. Headphones for these highly sound dependant packages are available without charge at the Reference Desk.

Internet Access
The library began in 1998 offering high-performance Internet service to patrons, thanks to a Title II Federal grant received to expand electronic resources. The library currently leases a 1 Mbps fiber-optic connection from OPALCO's Island Network generously managed by Rock Island Communications. The Library’s Internet Use Policy sets Internet use guidelines for patrons.

Public Wireless Network
The library provides a broadband wireless network for public access to the Internet. Access to the network is controlled through an encryption key which is freely available at the Reference Desk. Your portable computer must be compatible with Wireless B or Wireless G Standards to successfully communicate with the network.

Online Databases
The Library subscribes to a number of online database resources which may be accesed from within the Library or from home using your library card number and PIN number. These databases provide access to great deal of . Click here >>> for the complete list.
CD-Roms
The library has a collection of CD-ROM applications available in the circulating collection, each of which are available for check-out for a period of 2 weeks. A household is limited to 4 CD-ROMs at any one time, and it is understood that the application will be erased from the Patron's hard drive once the loan period is up. CD-ROM software installation is not permitted on library computers; these titles are available for home use only.

Electronic Catalog

SJILD uses a Dynix-based electronic catalog database which Patrons and staff may search from several text-based terminals and Windows-based PCs. The electronic catalog and patron accounts may also be accessed through the Library's web site using the Web Portal interface at http://catalog.sjlib.org.
Cable Television
As part of their island franchise agreement, Adelphia/Time Warner provides the library with free basic cable which does include Public Access channels. Patrons may avail themselves of this service by reserving the Meeting Room and watching on the television provided.
