Mission Statement

 

The San Juan Island Library is a learning center for the community: a place for people to pursue independent educational and recreational interests, to use information resources, and to meet and interact in a public forum.

 

Long Range Plan

 

The two primary Service Priorities for the library are to:


  • Facilitate Lifelong Learning
  • Provide a Public Forum
Facilitate Lifelong Learning Service Goals

 

  1. Island residents will find a wide range of resources to support independent inquiry and the exploration of ideas throughout their lives.  
  1. Island children will have access to materials supporting their educational curriculum or program.  
  1. The joy of recreational reading and learning will be encouraged and supported by programs and resources for people of all ages.  
  1. The collection of materials and tools will reflect the interests, needs and character of the community while representing various points of view.

 

Objectives
 

  1. Prepare a formal collection development plan
    1. Age group

    1. Subject area, including but not limited to:

                         i.      Northwest/local interest

                         ii.      Business & career

                         iii.     Stewardship of natural environment

  1. Pursue collaborative opportunities with other organizations and agencies, including but not limited to those concerning education, environment, government, and business

    3. Investigate the use of digital/virtual services and other emerging technologies
  3. Develop and promote workshops on the use of electronic and print resources

Service Goals

 

  1. Members of the community will find places and opportunities to meet and interact in groups of all sizes.  
  1. An environment for the cultivation of community identity and character will be provided in an effort to meet the needs of island residents and guests.  
  1. A means of disseminating public information and announcements will be maintained and made available to community members and guests.

 

Objectives
 

  1. Create an digital forum
  2. Expand adult programming sponsored by the library
  3. Promote collaborative programs for the exploration and discussion of a wide range of social, political, and environmental issues
  4. Provide opportunities for community involvement and volunteerism
  5. Evaluate library facilities needs on an ongoing basis

 

 

This plan is the product of a series of planning meetings which took place in early 2006 with a community-based Long Range Planning Committee. Members included: Christine Chan, Doris Estabrooks, Ellie Fulton, Dennis Hazelton, Beth Helstien, Marie Johansen, Jim Knight, Tom Metke, Kevin Ranker, Lisa Salisbury, and Joyce Sobel. The committee followed the method outlined in The New Planning For Results by Sandra Nelson for the Public Library Association. The meetings were facilitated by Rand Simmons and Karen Goettling of the Washington State Library.
